Overview
The Number Memory Test measures how long a string of digits you can hold after seeing it briefly. Once the number disappears, entering the same sequence advances you one digit further. There is a limit to how much we can hold at once, which is part of why phone numbers sit at roughly the length most people can retain. As the digits pile up, how you group them matters more than raw memory.
Rules
- A number appears. Longer numbers are shown for longer
- Once it disappears, type the same sequence and submit
- A correct answer adds one digit and moves you on
- A mistake ends the test, and the longest number you answered correctly becomes your score

FAQ
Are there tips for reaching more digits?
Breaking the number into chunks of two or three digits works well. Reading "4 8 2 9 1 5" as "48 / 29 / 15" halves the number of items you have to hold. Tying digits to something meaningful, like a year or a familiar figure, also helps once you get used to it.
Is it fine to say the digits out loud?
Rehearsing them aloud or in your head makes a clear difference over short intervals. Memory for digits leans heavily on memory for sound, and many people reach more digits precisely this way.
How is this different from the Sequence Memory test?
Sequence Memory works with spatial information — which panel lit up and in what order — while this test works with verbal information. Different mechanisms are involved, so being strong at one and weak at the other is entirely common.
