Overview
The Chimp Test measures how much of a numeric layout you can capture at a glance. The numbers scattered on screen all vanish the moment you press the first one, and from there you must work upward from memory alone. Primate research at Kyoto University reported that chimpanzees outperform human adults on tasks of this kind, which reshaped how researchers think about momentary visual memory. Every extra number makes the layout sharply harder to hold, and most people hit their limit before reaching double digits.
Rules
- Numbers appear scattered across the grid. Take in the whole layout first
- Pressing 1 hides every number at once. From here you are working from memory
- Press the rest in ascending order. Clearing a round adds one more number
- A wrong tap costs a strike. The third strike ends the test, and your reached level becomes your score

FAQ
How is this different from the Sequence Memory test?
Sequence Memory asks you to remember an order that unfolds over time, while this test asks you to capture a layout that is visible all at once. One relies on remembering sequence, the other on grasping space in an instant, so people are often clearly better at one than the other.
Are there any tips?
Taking in the whole screen as a shape tends to work better than tracing the numbers one by one. Splitting the layout into groups of three or four, or remembering the line the numbers trace, also helps. What decides your result is how much you capture in the instant before the numbers disappear, not how hard you search afterwards.
Why do chimpanzees do better than humans at this?
One view is that humans habitually recode what they see into words, which works against them in momentary visual memory. Chimpanzees, not relying on language, may hold what they saw more directly as an image. This remains an open research question rather than a settled conclusion.
